Some odds and ends as the year tips toward half done …
Congratulations are in order for the inaugural class of the Power Line Worker Training School at Pickett Park near Blackstone. The program, part of Southside Virginia Community College’s curriculum, is an important step forward in ensuring the continued reliability of our electric service. Read all about the program in this issue’s Viewpoint column and cover story.
The March-April issue’s History Mystery contest featured a photo of country music legend Patsy Cline, a Winchester native who died in a small-plane crash in 1963 when she was only 30 years old. Given the massive volume of contest entries we received, our suspicions were confirmed: There are many, many Patsy Cline fans among our readership.
That’s something we anticipated. What we didn’t anticipate was receiving entries from several cooperative members who either knew Patsy or are related to her.
From the Northern Neck to Prince George to Richmond to the northern Shenandoah Valley, a number of readers from points across Virginia let us know that our March-April History Mystery subject was a friend, acquaintance or relative before her untimely passing. The world gets smaller all the time.
To Cooperative Living staff member Sue Glisson, we wish a fond farewell. Sue, who worked at the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives (publisher of this magazine) more than 18 years, retired at the end of May.
If you’ve called Cooperative Living anytime in the past 15 years, you most likely talked to Sue. She’s worked at a variety of jobs in her tenure here, most recently as Cooperative Living’s classified ad manager and our administrative and advertising assistant.
We’ll miss Sue and we wish her the best as she embarks on her richly deserved retirement.
